(Henniker, NH, November 20, 2012) –The Children’s Alliance of NH today released the NH Roadmap to End Childhood Hunger; a systemic guide to tackling the root causes of childhood hunger. The NH Roadmap was created through a year-long effort by a diverse coalition of anti-hunger and child advocates, business and community leaders known as NH Hunger Solutions. The publication of the NH Roadmap took place Tuesday at the Henniker Community School where both the work of community partners and funders was recognized and the school’s innovative breakfast program was showcased.

The event focused on the critical need to address childhood hunger in the state of NH while highlighting the steps outlined in the NH Roadmap to achieve lasting change. The NH Roadmap is the first statewide plan of its kind in New Hampshire to outline steps in the effort to end childhood hunger.

 “The issues facing hungry children can be quite complex, but the solution is simple- connect children to the healthy food they need every day,” said Ellen Fineberg, Executive Director of the Children’s Alliance of NH.

Speaker Joe Carelli, President of Citizens Bank NH and VT also stressed the long term economic consequences of childhood hunger in NH and the need for coordinated and strategic solutions.

“Addressing the issue of hunger is a priority of the Citizens Bank Foundation," said Joe Carelli, President of Citizens Bank in New Hampshire.  "The Children's Alliance of New Hampshire and its partners are taking the lead in developing a comprehensive, systematic approach to ending childhood hunger in our state.  This road map provides a clear path for ways that we can work together to ensure that every child in New Hampshire has three healthy meals each day."

Other speakers included Commissioner of Agriculture, Food and Markets Lorraine Merrill and Marty Davis, the Food Service Director for the Henniker Community School.

One in four cities in New Hampshire is at high risk for food insecurity, or the inability to access affordable healthy food. And, one in five households with children experiences food insecurity. When children are hungry, they are more likely to have chronic health problems. Hunger also impedes their ability to learn and succeed in school.  When our children aren’t healthy, our families and communities aren’t healthy. The NH Roadmap to End Childhood Hunger recognizes the changes that our communities and our state have to make to ensure that no child goes hungry.
